List of university where gre is not required
GRE is compulsory for students pursuing an engineering degree. Some schools accept students without a GRE score. Few Universities waive GRE on the basis of undergraduate academic record. The graduate program in Computer Science at Purdue University is one of the very few top programs which do not require the GRE score. TOEFL iBT/IELTS is compulsory for all students wishing to pursue an education in the U.S. However, please keep in mind that it is very tough to get a visa without GRE scores. We can process your application and get you an admission in some schools without test scores. However, you may not get a visa.
For MS in Computer Science at San Jose State University, GRE score is not required if the undergraduate degree is from USA.So it is possible to get admitted to a US University for MS without GRE score. The following programs waive the GRE score for qualifying candidates:
* California State Univ. at Channel Islands (CS)
* California State Univ. at Northridge (CS)
* Carnegie Mellon University (Physics)
* University of Utah (Chemical Engg)
* University of Pennsylvania (Nursing)

how to prepare for gre
Second year of B.E.- Have a passport ready or apply for one- Gather enough study material and information on GRE, TOEFL etc.- Start preparing from the fourth semester itself.
Third year of B.E.- Book your GRE, TOEFL dates sometime during July with the TOEFL date lagging GRE by a week.- Decide on the program (area of interest) and the universities based on various factors.- Take your GRE and TOEFL between your sixth and seventh semester.
Final year of B.E.- Based on your GRE and TOEFL scores, start applying to your chosen universities before December (during your seventh semester).- After you receive admits, decide which university you are going to join.- After you receive your I-20, get all other documents ready. Also block your airline ticket through a travel agent.- This is also the time for applying for an educational loan or scholarship.Post B.E.- Book for a visa date sometime during June (before the last week).- Keep your fingers crossed!- After getting the visa, Take an student insurance and get other materials ready.

Tution fee & living expenses
The cost of Study Tuition and fees) in USA varies from $5000 to $35000 (or more) per year.
The cost of living depends on location. For example States like Washington, California and area around New York is costly.
In general the cost of living may vary from $6000 to $10000.
Renting an apartment can vary from $450 to$1000 (or more). Downtown (Chicago) may costs around $1200 for studio while it may be around $400 for Des Moines (IA).
Grocery is Really cheap (Walmart!).
It is assumed that students will live in shared Apartments, Live out of Campus and have less Telephone bills and other expenses are at bay.
Most of (nearly) all expenses Living only not Tuition fees) can be met while working on Campus Jobs. The hourly pay for on Campus jobs Pay from $5 to $15 (sometimes more) per hour.
Foreign Students can work for 20 hrs per week and 40 hrs per week during summer. Students may be allowed to work out Campus after nine months of their arrival at USA.
Students receiving any type of AID Like TA/RA/Fellowship or GA don't have to worry about costs. But Students not receiving any AID must come prepared for Tuition fees and Living cost for initial 2-3 months.
In some Universities TA/RA cover part of tuition fees and not all tuition fee is waived.
Note that in some universities like University of Missouri, Rolla, Texas at Dallas and University of Texas Arlington there is huge shortage of P/T jobs. So students Planning to go to these universities must either have Scholarships or adequate Funds. Its better to contact current students via email for latest information.
During 2004-05 aid scene has increased as compared to 2002.
During year (2002 and 2003) Scholarships were limited in most of the Universities. In some cases students who got scholarships have to face rollback. Aid situation is much better these days as compared to 2002-03.

Cost of MS in US
Cost of MS in US
Cost of Education
Cost of studying in US is huge, when compared to the cost students pay for college in India. If you plan to study in US Universities, then plan for the worst case scenario. Make sure you take into account of all possible expense you come across. Never think, you can get scholarship or assistanship as soon as you reach U.S. It takes time and some students wait long time before they get to see some form Financial Aid ( Grants, Scholarships, Research Assistantship, Teaching Assistantship or part time job)
First question parents who ask, if you say about your plan to study in U.S. - How much would it cost to study in U.S.? do we have so much money to pay for it? Will they give aid for studying in U.S. Schools? and many more..
Total Cost of MS in US
I have written few article about cost of living in U.S. for students and how much a typical student from India would spend per month. But, as soon you you reach U.S. all the things you heard about will become reality. You will come face to face with certain uncertainties and way of life. But, that’s the way it will be and every student have to face it. Most of the information that gets passed to students back in India or other places are not true.
You will wonder what kind of questions I get and how students believe that. But, when there is no place to find such information, then what they hear is what they believe as truth. I try to clarify lots of questions and one I’m going to explain today is total expenses for studying in U.S. For this example, I’m going to assume a student coming to US to study MS without any form of aid.
Living Expenses
Student share the apartment, grocery bills, food expenses, phone bill, internet, and many more day to day activities. Usually, a new student tend to spend very less for first few months. You can read more about spending habits of International students. But, as time goes, one of the reality will set in - You will not convert $ to Rs. It takes time, but over 3-4 months, you will see $1 equal Rs.1.
Even though you will be paying all the cost from your parents money or your savings, that’s the reality. Time will change you and way of life, but its for better. So, you can expect to spend from $250 to $700 per month by living life with basic necessities. Remember cost of MS in US varies based on location and university.
Tuition Fees
Tution Fees is the major cost you will incur while studying in U.S. International students have to pay Out of State Fees. In state fees is usually 1/3rd of Out of state fees. So, if you don’t get scholarship, get ready to pay $5000 to $9000, maybe more per semester for 3 courses ( 9 Credits). MS runs from 2 years to 2.5 years in other words 30 to 36 credits. Based on that you can do that math.
Why Pay so much to study in U.S.?
Well, you can get to pay back the student loan in 2-3 years time after you get a job. You get to study the latest technologies that are invented and used by rest of the world. You might get to take a course under a professor in U.S. University, who’s book you should have used as part of syllabus back in India or other places in the world. I would say, cost of MS in US is big, but its worth every penny. America is land of wonders, opportunity and many more.

Break-up of GRE Score
Break-up of GRE Score
The GRE score is further divided into verbal, quantitative and analytical writing assessment scores in your score report. Separate scores, particularly for quantitative section, are very important. Most engineering programs put strong emphasis on quantitative ability and consider your math score to be a reflection of your quantitative skills. A good balance in the quantitative and verbal scores would be ideal; however, if you have to be stronger on one section of the test than on the other, it is definitely better to be stronger in quantitative sections.
A good balance would be getting in the 700s in each section. Your GRE score card will have the following breakup:
Low - High
Total Score 400 - 1600
Quantitative Score 200 - 800
Verbal Score 200 - 800
We have seen that most international students perform well in the quantitative section as compared to the verbal. Students who have strong mathematics background should invest time in improving their verbal scores to achieve the desired balance in their scores.
For candidates with less than 1000 score, we would recommend one of the following:
If you attribute your low score to lack of effort, preparation or coaching, you should definitely take the GRE again. A better GRE score along with good credentials in other key criteria will greatly enhance your chances of getting into a good program.
There are many candidates, who do not perform well in limited-time, high-pressure exams. If you are one of those candidates, you may not score high by re-taking the exam. No problem! You just need to put extra effort on your statement of purpose highlighting your research capabilities. For some of you who need guidance with writing application essays, we strongly recommend our consulting services.
What is a Good ‘Ball Park’?
What is a Good ‘Ball Park’?
In most of the top programs, ‘ball park’ starts at about 1300. This is not a strict cutoff. However, with scores less than 1200, your chances of getting into the top program are minimal (Unless of course, you wrote a research paper challenging Einstein’s Theory of Relativity)
As a good estimate, if your GRE score is within a school's median 80 percent range, even if it's 60 points below the school's median, you have a reasonable chance of being admitted. If it's below that 80 percent range you still have a shot, but it's a long shot. Most programs print their 80 percent ranges in their brochures. For those that don't, you can make a rough estimate by assuming the range starts about 60 points below the median and ends about 60 points above it. As long as you are within that range, you have a reasonable chance of being admitted.

gre
When is the suitable time to take GRE?
It is advisable to take the General Test in at least in October or November for FALL admission (August) of the next academic year. This will ensure that your scores will be available to meet any admissions deadline. Also, if you do poorly on your first take, you should have enough time to re-take the test in December & try to improve your scores.
What is a CAT-GRE?
CAT - Computer-Adaptive Test is a computerized form of the paper-based GRE. Paper Based one is now not available in most parts of the world. It is not necessary to know computer's in detail to take the test but some basic knowledge on computers is essential.
Here, the computer chooses a single question at an instant of time from the large database of questions available, ranging them by difficulty level and classified by their contents. The first question is always of an intermediate level, neither too hard nor to easy, and each succeeding question is determined by your answers to all the questions you attended previously.
That is how CAT adjusts itself to your ability level and different from paper-based pattern. One disadvantage is you have to be very sure before confirming the answer for each question as you don't have the option of reviewing or going back to a particular question or section (As the succeeding question depends on the answer you gave for current question).
GRE Test Format
The General Test is composed of four parts--Verbal, Quantitative, Analytical writing and an experimental section
The verbal and the quantitative tests each yield a separate score between 200-800.Your minimum score starts with 200 and the final score depends on the number of questions you got right and the difficulty level of each. It is possible to get full 800 even though you get few questions wrong which is of lower priority.
The analytical test was similar to the others sections till Sep'02. Now, the GRE Test has an analytical writing test, in which you type or write by hand your answers to two questions. The analytical writing section will be similar to the Writing Assessment, an another part of GRE, is different from general GRE, which many international student would not prefer taking. The current analytical section will no longer be part of the General GRE. The new section has two topic: one on an “Issue” topic for 45 minutes and one on an “Argument” topic for 30 minutes. The writing test is always taken first.
Finally, the experimental section which do not count towards your score. It can either be Quantitative, Verbal, or Analytical. The worst part is, you cannot guess which one is the experimental section and it can appear at any time of the test. So, it advisable, not to speculate on which is the experimental one and to take all of them meticulously.
There is an optional 10-minute break, which usually occurs after the second section of the exam. It is better to utilize the break to relax which helps you to concentrate on consequent sections.
GRE Fees
There is no restriction on students wishing to take the GRE test. There is no constrain based on qualification or age levied on the student. Though the GRE test scores has a validity of five years and are acceptable by most of the universities, it is recommended that the student submit scores that are not older than 2 years to make a better impression on the universitiesThe GRE fees for the GRE test differs from country to country. The GRE Test fee cannot be paid in any other currency other than US dollars. Several payment options for paying GRE Fees are available.
GRE Test Fees - Payment Modes
The GRE Test fees can be paid in many modes. Below is the given list of valid payment mode for GRE Feesglobally accepted credit cardUS dollar denominated draftMoney Order/Certified CheckU.S. Postal Money OrderInternational Money OrderUNESCO Coupons
There is no compulsion that the credit card should be owned by the applicant for paying the GRE Fees. The draft should be drawn in favor of ETS GRE payable at US banks. The drafts are usually issued at most of the cities' main branch offices of banks having a foreign exchange counter. To draw an US dollar denominated draft in India a service charge of about 200 rupees is levied on the student.
GRE Test Fees - By Country
Generally to register for the GRE test within US and U.S. territories and Puerto Rico amounts to 115 dollars for General test and 130 dollars for Subject test. The registration fee of 140 dollars for General test and 150 dollars for Subject test which amounts to about 7000 rupees has to be paid by the Indian student who wishes to take the test. Students from China, inclusive of Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan, need to pay 175 U.S. dollars as GRE registration fee.The student who wish to reschedule their GRE test is required to pay a 40 dollar reschedule fee. Any additional score report would require 15 dollars as payment for per sheet. The refund on cancellation would amount to 60 dollars and is valid only if the cancellation is made at least 7 days before the chosen test date. The standby fee on registration of GRE is 35 US dollars.

Improve Gre score
10 Steps to Improve Your GRE ScoreFollow
the steps listed below for preparing for GRE Exam. I’m sure it will increase your score.
Step 1
There are lots of free online GRE practice Tests available. Take one of the test without any distractions and see how you score in Verbal and Quantitative.
Step 2
For the questions you have answered wrong, make sure you find out why you selected the wrong answer and find how to solve it right. If you happen to learn a new formula or words, make a note of it. you could use a separate notebook, one for Verbal and one for Maths. (Top 50 words and 299 Frequently Asked words in GRE)
Step 3
Also, spend at least 1 hour per day for GRE Vocabulary from Barron’s GRE book. It has 50 Word Lists. Try to remember atleast 1 word list per week. So, every week you can read 50 to 100 new words.
Step 4
Week 1 read the first word list, Week 2 revise the first word list and then start learning the Second Word List. So, that you will not forget the words.
Step 5
Best way to remember new words is to form a sentence for each word. (Other technique - I used Flash Cards, carried all the words I had hard time to remember with me. If you look at a word for more than 5 times, it will be easy to remember )
Step 6
Next, take an GRE Practice Test again and see how much you score, and for mistakes you make, again evaluate what went wrong. In this way, you will learn new maths formulas and at same time your score will increase month by month.
Step 7
No need to worry that you are scoring less in GRE tests now, every student initially has the same problem. Spending atleast 1-2 hours per day for first 3 months from now will get you going. In 4-5 months time you will see huge difference in the score.
Step 8
So, the key to improve your GRE Scores and skills is to practice daily and if you select a wrong answer in your practice test, make sure you find the right answer and how to find the right answer.
Step 9
Majority of the students make the mistake of not finding out the right answers for the questions they go it wrong in GRE Practice test. This is the most proven way to improve your scores in GRE. In your GRE exams (practice) and lets say you score 1000 and 2 months later in your GRE Practice test if you score around 1000 again, then I can say, 2 months of time spent studying GRE is of no use, unless the score improves.
Step 10
If your score doesn’t improve, try following different approach for preparation. I will write about other ways to study for GRE.
The secret of getting admission with scholarship
The secret of getting admission with scholarship.
Each and every college student has dream to get admission with scholarship.if you apply in some grad college with your minimum gre score there is less chances of getting schloarship but a lot of student do this & waste few hundred dollars in college application fee and GRE and TOEFL score forwarding, application documents courier fee, when grad school admission is not sure.Example:GRE Score : 1200;Grad School Minimum Requirement : 1400And other factors are less than minimum requirementsI really wouldn’t waste my time and money in applying to such college.Instead I would spend more time in searching for universities and college, that suits my profile. Also, it’s better to find decent schools that had research funding and that has minimum requirements less than what your credentials are.Example:Your GRE Score : 1310;Grad School Minimum Requirement : 1100And other factors are more or equal to the minimum requirementsThere are so many grad schools out there with lots of research and scholarship opportunities.

Low GRE Score, Can I Still Be Admitted to M.S.
have low GRE score can I still get admitted to Masters program - is the common question among students who got low GRE score (less than 1000). But GRE score of 1000 doesn’t mean its low, if student was expecting to score 1300 in GRE and ended up getting 1130 then its considered low GRE.Along with above low GRE score questions, other common questions I come acrossLow GRE, high GPA admissionsLow GPA and low GRE score admission to graduate schoolHigh GRE and low GPA admission to M.S.I have stated so many times in previous article about graduate school admission considers various factors during admissions. GRE scores are not the only factor that will get admission into grad school. But, to help university search low gre score universities gave an idea that would help students to know what kind of schools they can get admission with low gre scores. But, its important for every student to ask what is low gre score? How did you know your gre scores are low? What are you comparing against to say the gre scores are below average?
